In the Magazine: Food Kid Lit!
Posted on May 07, 2024
Last week, Words Without Borders published a mouthwatering list of food-focused kid lit by World Kid Lit's Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp. This roundup features thirteen picture books, middle grade, and YA novels exploring food in many forms: "Food as a treat, food as a weapon, food that brings us together, and hunger that compounds our isolation."
Some books that might be of particular interest to educators include a picture book from China about a grandmother's rooftop vegetable garden, a YA novel about a Palestinian American girl and a jar of teleporting olives (complete with discussion questions and teaching resources), and a graphic memoir from Lebanon that explores cultural difference through food preferences.
